Rakesh Bhayani, 40, and Nicholas Kutner, 47, appeared at the Old Bailey today charged with murdering Miss Waugh, 50, between April 15 and August 3.

They were further charged with conspiring with four women and others to defraud banks and other institutions by pretending to be Miss Waugh, who disappeared from her home in Marylebone.

This included plundering her bank account and using bank cards in her name and using her flat as security for a loan.

Kutner is further charged with impersonating Miss Waugh’s brother Christopher to sell her flat between July 1 and August 1.

No pleas were taken and unemployed Bhayani, of Chamberlayne Avenue, Wembley, north west London, and Kutner, of no fixed address, were remanded to February 1. A trial will take place not before September.

Miss Waugh’s remains were found inside a car in a lock-up garage in Lime Court, New Malden on August 2.

Originally from Durham, she was reported missing by her family on May 7 and had not been seen since mid-April.
