A chef who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death in front of their toddler daughter, using his kitchen knives, has been jailed for a minimum of 17 years.
Delton Coley admitted to stabbing Daneshia Arthur 20 times with his chef’s knives at her home.
At a hearing at the Old Bailey today, Coley, of no fixed abode, claimed he wanted only to threaten Miss Arthur with a knife after she refused to let him see his daughter.
But the 36-year-old said something “flipped in my head” causing him to stab his fashion designer girlfriend as their three-year-old daughter looked on.
Coley, who fled the scene with the pair’s daughter and their pet dog and was found by police at an address in Upton Park the day after the murder, told the court: “I lashed out.”
Miss Arthur, who was setting up her own fashion business, was left dying face down in the hallway of the property in Baden Powell Close, Dagenham.
Sentencing him to a minimum of 17 years behind bars, Judge Brian Barker QC told Coley: “This was a senseless killing. You have deeply damaged many other lives.”
Miss Arthur’s body was found by her mother, Coleen Ollivierre, with around 20 stab wounds, some of which were 14cm deep.
In a statement released after the sentencing Mrs Ollivierre said: “Daneshia’s death has destroyed our lives and family. We are traumatised, broken hearted, emotionally unstable, shocked and finding it hard to accept that we have to experience such a great loss.
“We have lost a very, very special daughter, mother, sister and friend. A very loving woman, a very caring woman with a good character and sense of humour. Daneshia was strong willed, motivated, trustworthy and reliable.”
Miss Arthur’s brother, Gregory Arthur, said: “Daneshia was a focused and beautiful individual inside and out and to be taken from us in this manner is devastating and unjust. We have to pick up the pieces that this coward has left behind.”
