A man has been bailed by police probing the mugging of a senior British diplomat in a cemetery in Hammersmith, London.

George Fergusson, 56, was left blinded in one eye by the attack last Friday.

He is due to take up the post of Governor of Bermuda soon, despite his injury.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and questioned by police over the attack – in which a small amount of money was stolen.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of robbery and was taken to a west London police station. He has now been bailed to return on 7 June pending further inquiries.”

Mr Fergusson was attacked at around 7.30pm while walking in Margravine Cemetery and Park, also known as Hammersmith Cemetery.

He has previously served as Governor of the Pitcairn Islands and high commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa.
