London Mayor Boris Johnson was in Romford this morning to endorse the first campaign of its kind in the country to target under age drinkers.

It will see youngsters banned from Romford until they are 19.

Teenagers caught attempting to use fake ID in an attempt to drink under age will be banned from the town’s pubs and clubs.

And those under the influence of alcohol in the streets will be given ‘yellow cards’ and given temporary bans from the town centre.

Boris Johnson gave his backing to both schemes by Havering Council and Havering Police.

Mr Johnson said: “A woman told me on the way here that Romford is the place to be on a Friday night.

“I think Romford has a fantastic reputation and great attractions, the down side to that is the problems that come with alcohol.

“I think this is the first place in the country to be doing this scheme and the council and the police are doing a fantastic job.”

It is part of a drive to reduce alcohol-related disorder in the town.

Last month the council announced 100 drunken troublemakers were banned under the ‘banned from one, banned from all’ scheme.

The new schemes aim to deter people under age from using fake ID to get into a licensed premises.

If they are caught they will be refused entry, have their ID seized and door staff may call the police.

They will then be questioned about their identity and their parents will be contacted.

Repeat offenders can be arrested and taken to court.

Those under the influence of alcohol will be given yellow cards and banned from the town centre for up to 48 hours.

Cllr Michael White,lLeader of Havering Council, said: “Our message to young people is if you are caught out, you’ll be kept out of Romford until you are 19. We want young people to enjoy nights out in Romford once they are 18.”
