Woman stabbed by mugger as she walked home from East Croydon railway station

07:54 28 May 2012

A 39-year-old woman was stabbed as she walked home in Croydon, south London, in the early hours of this morning (May28).

Police say the victim had got off a train at East Croydon station at 12.30am and made her way onto Morland Avenue when a man approached her and asked if she knew what the time was.

The woman explained she did not have a watch, but the man then asked her for her money and pulled a knife out.

He grabbed hold of the woman’s handbag and after a short struggle stabbed her in both arms.

The woman managed to hold onto the bag and the man fled the scene empty-handed.

The victim was taken to hospital where she is in a stable condition.

Police say the suspect is described as a black youth aged about 18 or 19, of slim build, about 6ft tall with short curly black hair.

He was wearing a three-quarter length cargo jacket and dark coloured trousers.

Detective Sergeant Hayley Stanesby said “This was a very violent attack on a woman trying to make her way home.

“The victim showed tenacity and bravery to keep hold of her valuables despite being stabbed several times. The level and violence is unusual and we would ask anyone who knows who this man is to come forward.”

Anyone with information should call officers on 020 3276 2228 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
