Archant

Five men have been arrested today after an attempted ‘smash and grab’ at a jewellers in Westfield Stratford City.

The attempted raid happened just after midnight.

Police said four men were seen approaching the shop on the centre’s ground floor. The group then smashed the windows of the outlet with axes and hammers, but were arrested before any items were stolen.

A fifth man, waiting in a vehicle outside the shopping centre, made off from the scene but was subsequently traced to an address in Islington and arrested.

All five remain in custody.

The arrests were made following a proactive operation by the Met Police’s Flying Squad and officers from the SCO19 Specialist Firearms Command.
