The victim managed to stumble onto Forest Road, a main road, and flag down a passing police car at around 5pm.

First aid was provided by the officer while an air ambulance rushed to the scene.

But the man died before more help could arrive.

He was 36-years-old. Officers were today bidding to reach next of kin.

No arrests had been made.

A police spokesman said: “We must retain an open mind at this early stage on the circumstances of the incident.

“An incident room will open under detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.”

Call police with information on 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
