The death of a man at Marble Arch in central London is now being treated as murder by police.
Officers were called in the early hours of Thursday to reports of a body found in Westminster.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A post-mortem examination on Thursday gave cause of death as strangulation.
An incident room has opened under Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall, of the homicide and serious crime command.
She said: “The body was found next to a bench under one of the arches at Marble Arch. He may have been killed at any point during the night, and we are urgently appealing for anyone who may have seen an altercation or anything suspicious in the vicinity during Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday to come forward.”
