Archant

It was last seen streaming down the River Thames during the Olympic Games opening ceremony, with David Beckham’s assured hand on the tiller.

And now the speedboat, seen by millions all over the world as it took the Flame on its last leg before it reached the stadium, is going under the hammer.

Bonhams Auctioneers expects to fetch up to £250,000 for the 2008 Bladerunner BR RIB 35 when it goes on sale at Mercedes-Benz World in Brooklands on Monday.

The heavily-customised boat is fitted with four dummy rockets with smoke canisters, a high-pressure waterjet bar and dozens of LED lights.

It formed part of a dazzling display, with its progress down the river including a curtain of fire descending from Tower Bridge.

The Bladerunner joins a Hawker Hurricane aircraft and a number of notable motor cars at the sale, including a 1931 Invicta S-Type and a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT.

Tim Schofield, director of the Bonhams UK Motor Car department, said: “After a fantastic summer of British sporting success, Bonhams is proud to offer for sale the ultimate souvenir from the Olympic opening ceremony – what has been dubbed ‘the greatest show on earth’.

“With this boat, the Hawker Hurricane aircraft and a number of important motor cars among the lots, our ever-popular pre-Christmas sale is shaping up to be one of the best yet.”
