Mosaics designed by children from Tower Hamlets will soon be appearing in Whitechapel after artists offered to turn their visions into reality.

Artists work on making the designs a reality

Two years ago judges chose a selection of winning designs, and artists are now working hard to install mosaics onto the front of a building in Osborn Street.

The competition was open to seven to nine year-olds from five primary schools in Tower Hamlets. Pupils’ paintings were inspired by East London, with textiles, the East End docks and Whitechapel all featuring prominently.

Once completed in the autumn, the mosaics will be 10 feet tall and six feet wide, and will weigh up to 30kg.

11-year-old Emad-Ul Hoque, who is a pupil at Shapla Primary School, said: “I really enjoyed doing this project and I can’t wait until my mosaic is on the building.”

One of the artists involved, JulieStedman, added: “The murals are really colourful and we are sticking as faithfully as possible to the designs which the children have created - I hope they will be impressed with the finished result.”
