Green-fingered pupils set up stalls in Canary Wharf selling fresh produce last week as part of a campaign to encourage the use and awareness of sustainable foods in schools.

Children from Charlton Manor School and Corelli College in Greenwich sold produce at Waitrose in Canary Wharf at lunchtime on Friday, in conjunction with the School Food Matters charity.

The project aims to encourage schools to set aside space allowing them to grow their own produce. It is hoped that this will improve understanding amongst children of where their meals come from, and allow them to enjoy sustainable foods.

The charity is particularly focused on getting local authorities to look at where they source ingredients for school meals, and promoting food education in schools through cooking and visits to farms.

Stephanie Wood, founder of School Food Matters, said: “This is a fantastic enterprise experience for students who have been working hard all year on their school veg patch.”
