Parents and carers can find information and apply for places online at www.haringey.gov.uk/schooladmissions.

Cllr Ann Waters, Haringey Council’s cabinet member for children, encouraged parents and carers to consider all options carefully, not singling out one school – and to involve prospective pupils in decisions.

She said: “We have some fantastic primary and secondary schools in Haringey, and of course we have new types of schools such as academies and free schools that are also available to parents and students.

“Parents and carers should go along with their children to meet and talk with the schools in their area to inform their preferred schools list.”

She added: “Parents and carers often have a fixed idea about which school they want their children to go to and only list that one school on the application form. Nominating only one school will not give your child any advantage in securing a place.

“Always aim to list up to six schools on applications to increase the possibility of your child being offered a place at a school that you and they would be happy to go to.”

Haringey Council has produced two booklets – one for reception and junior admissions, and one for secondary – with details of all Haringey schools and a full explanation of the admissions process.

Booklets and application forms are online now and will be available to pick up from schools from mid-September. Reference copies will also be available to read at libraries and customer service centres. Applications can also be made to schools outside Haringey, which the authority will pass on.

Applications can this year be made online as well. The list of preferred schools can be changed as often as you like before the closing date, and applicants will receive email confirmation of their applications, and the official offer by email the evening before postal offers are due to be received. The deadline for secondary school place applications for 2013 is October 31 this year, with reception and junior admissions closing on January 15, 2013. Parents with children at some, but not all, infant schools will have to apply to join a junior school.

Questions about the application process should be directed to the Haringey School Admissions Service on 020 8489 1000.
