Young scientists in Plaistow were named the best in the borough after competing in a science and techonolgy day.

Eight secondary schools across Newham went head-to-head in the Newham Gifted and Talened Science and Technology Challenge Day on Thursday June 14 at Queen Mary University in Mile End.

The Regional Competition saw budding scientists from Year Eight and Year Nine get into mixed school teams of four and complete a series of brainy tasks.

To determine the most promising scientists of tomorrow, the challenges were designed to be hands on science and technology based activities.

The students competed against each other in a robot activity, a bridge building task, forensic investigations, and a vehicle building challenge.

Year Eight students at Cumberland School in Oban Close won the most challenges including the Forensic Investigation and the Bridge Building Challenge.

Organised by MCS Projects Ltd, the event was funded by communication techonolgy company Siemens, who told the students about The Crystal, a £30 million landmark and visitor attraction they are building in the Royal Docks.
