Fifteen fire engines and up to 75 firefighters battled flames at the site in Hookers Road.

The fire broke out on the ground floor of the two storey building at around 3.30am on Saturday morning.

Firefighters were still bringing the inferno under control into daylight hours. They expect to remain at the scene all day.

There were no reports of injuries by lunchtime.

Residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed.

Speaking from the scene, station manager Nic McCallum said: “ “Our crews have been battling against this fire since the early hours of this morning, trying to get it under control and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

“There have been no evacuations from nearby properties so far but we are asking people in the area to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution because of smoke from the fire.”
