Around 15 firefighters remain at the scene of Chemical plant blaze in Greenwich, south-east London, which sent plumes of smelly smoke into the sky.

The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning at a processing plant in Peterboat Close.

At the height of the incident, 12 fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled the blaze.

A range of industrial units which contained chemicals were damaged by the fire, which was under control by 6.50am.

A loud siren sounded to alert people about the fire due to the chemicals contained within the buildings.

Due to the heavy smoke, London Fire Brigade received a number of calls from people across south-east London.

The brigade sought scientific advice on the smoke and was informed it was not harmful.

Assistant commissioner Dany Cotton said: "Our firefighters worked extremely hard to contain the fire, which damaged around half of a big industrial unit."

The brigade’s fire investigators are now on the scene to establish how the blaze started.
