Haringey Council has started a new venture to recycle cooking oil from its care homes in a pilot project.

The council is considering rolling out the service, provided by recycling firm Renewergy, to other community buildings if successful, as part of its commitment to cut its carbon footprint by 40 per cent by 2015.

Renewergy, set up by David Millward in 2008, specialises in turning food waste and used oil into bio-fuel for heating and bio-diesel for vehicles.

The entrepreneur set up Renewergy following a two-year battle with cancer that cost him his previous business, and almost his life.

David said: “We provide a general food waste recycling service for large and small catering businesses, from kitchen to compost.

“It’s been challenging getting started again after my illness but Renewergy is proof that it’s possible to bounce back. We deliver fresh oil at cost price, collect the used oil then recycle it in one easy process. A cost-effective food waste recycling service is easy to set up and we handle everything.”

Cllr Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for finance and carbon reduction, said: “By doing something simple like collecting used oil we can cut our food waste and reduce our impact on the environment.”
