The latest phase in the redevelopment of Newham General Hospital’s emergency care department is complete.
There is now an expanded 18-bed area featuring dedicated cubicles to treat patients with gynaecological and psychiatric needs.
The seven-bed resuscitation facility and a new eight-cubicle Urgent Care Centre are due to be completed next month.
Barts Health NHS Trust said the work is part of the modernisation programme for its emergency care service to enable the hospital to meet increased demand during the Olympics and beyond.
The final phase of work on the out of hours GP surgery and the paediatric facility is underway.
Bill Coode, the emergency department consultant, said: “The redevelopment has made a real difference to the care we can provide.
“The expanded facility means we have additional capacity, the design of the majors area means that clinicians are central to all cubicles and can monitor patient care more effectively, and the new modern environment is helping to improve the experience for Newham patients.”
