About 300 people turned out to see plans for a new leisure centre and supermarket in Romford town centre.

The public consultation, held in Romford Central Library, saw representatives of Havering Council and Morrisons presenting their plans, which are expected to be considered at a planning committee in Spring 2013.

Havering Council said that the concept of the Romford leisure development was to represent a frozen ice cube of cracked panes of translucent cladding.

Transport and parking links to the site were also highlighted.

The development is expected to bring approximately 300 new jobs, 500 car parking spaces and 65 new flats and houses to the town.

Leader of Havering Council, Cllr Michael White, said: “I’m pleased so many people came along to see our plans, I think it shows how excited people are to see a leisure centre back in Romford.

“If anybody wants to learn more about the new leisure centre please get in touch. I am really looking forward to seeing the final plans when they are submitted in the autumn.”

The plans are put of a land swap which will see Morrisons take over the Romford Ice Arena site and the new leisure centre built in Western Road.
