Unemployment in London dropped slightly between January and March.

The jobless rate in the capital city remained just above above 10 per cent – at 10.1 per cent.

In London there were 426,000 people out of work – the highest figure in the country.

The number of job-seekers who found work in that period was also sluggish compared to other regions.

For instance, in Yorkshire and the Humber, the jobless total was slashed by 24,000.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling hailed the figures. He said: “These figures are a welcome step in the right direction.

“For a number of months now, employment has been growing and this is starting to feed through into improving unemployment figures.

But events overseas still threatened to derail the UK’s recovery, warned Mr Grayling.

“However, we still face significant international uncertainty so we need to hold firm on our current economic strategy and continue to do everything we can to ensure unemployment continues to fall.”

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said people remained fearful for their jobs, amid continuing flat growth.

“The falling number of full-time jobs and the 6% fall in real wages over the last two years means that people are having to make huge salary sacrifices and put their careers on hold just to stay in work,” said Mr Barber.

“People’s incomes and job security today are barely any better than they were at the height of the financial crash.

“Unless governments act together and stop our austerity misery spiral, the UK’s economic depression will continue for far longer than feared.”
