Women’s Omnium guide

* The Omnium is new to the Olympic programme and features riders competing across six disciplines over the course of two days.

* The six events are the flying lap 250m time trial, 20km points race, elimination race, 3km individual pursuit, 10km scratch race and 500m time trial.

* In each event, the winner gets one point, the second-placed rider gets two points, the third three points, and so on.

* At the end of all six events the rider with the lowest total score is the winner.

The Welwyn Wheelers cyclist, just 20, struck gold in the Olympic Park Velodrome this evening in the women’s team pursuit.

She set a new world record with Team GB colleagues Dani King and Joanna Rowsell in the final against the USA trio.

After collecting her gold medal on the podium, Hertfordshire girl Laura took to Twitter to thank all her supporters.

She tweeted: “What a day!! Olympic champion!!!! Thanks to everyone there today and who has helped me along the way!! I love you all!!!! #Bringontheomnium”

And her face, along with those of teammates King and Rowsell, will be on stamps later in the week, with a postbox in her hometown also painted gold to mark the achievement.

Laura tweeted: “Oh and when my postbox gold tweet me your pics with it :-) x”

When someone of the stature of five-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy calls you a “megastar” you know you’ve made it.

And ITV News at Ten presenter Mark Austin expects Laura to challenge for a second medal in the two-day women’s omnium, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday.

The ITV anchorman tweeted: “Laura Trott is about to become a very big star. Another gold to come perhaps #London 2012”

On current form, you wouldn’t best against it. Laura, who started her cycling career with Welwyn Wheelers at the Gosling Sports Park track in Welwyn Garden City, is the current omnium world champion.
