London 2012: Busy Jubilee and Central lines on first day of Paralympic sport

15:47 29 August 2012

Commuters using London’s public transport network are advised to plan ahead, as the first sporting events of the Paralympic Games start tomorrow.

Events will take place in the Olympic Park, as well as at venues including Greenwich Park, ExCeL and the North Greenwich Arena.

Transport for London (TfL) is advising that public transport to venues will be busy and people are advised to plan ahead to avoid the busiest times and places.

London Underground, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and London Overground will all run an hour later than normal for people travelling home from events in the evening.

Tomorrow the Jubilee line from Waterloo to Stratford, the Central line from Holborn to Stratford, and the DLR are likely to be particularly busy between 7.30am and 9.30am, and 4pm to 7pm.

Large numbers of spectators are also expected to interchange at London Bridge and Bank to get to Games’ venues, so people are being advised to avoid interchanging there at peak time.

London’s Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy, said: “Tomorrow sees the start of another 11 days of fantastic sporting action as the London 2012 Paralympic Games gets underway.

“Londoners will support the Paralympics with the same enthusiasm with which they welcomed the Olympics, and once again a huge number of sporting, cultural and other attractions will be on offer across the city.

“The roads and public transport network serving the Paralympic venues will be busy with Games traffic, and more so as Londoners and their children return to work and school following the summer holidays.

“We are therefore asking people around the venues and the PRN to take the same sensible steps they did during the Olympics and avoid the busiest times and places where possible.”
