Olympic Torches are to be sold by the organisers of the London 2012 Games, with money made contributing to the costs of staging the Olympics and Paralympics.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) announced today that London 2012 commemmorative Torches will be available from its official online auction site throughout the Torch relay.

It said proceeds would “help subsidise the costs of Torches to torchbearers and contribute towards the staging of the Games”.

Each Torch on the auction site comes packed in a collectors box and has a certificate of authenticity and a unique serial ID number.

Torches will be released in special limited editions marking significant moments along the relay.

A number of Torches are on sale on the site now, with bidding for one featuring a shard signed by David Beckham currently at £1,550.

LOCOG commercial director Chris Townsend said: “The Olympic Torch relay signifies the start of an exciting summer of sport across the UK. The relay will last for 70 days and the Flame will carry with it the values and spirit of the Olympic Games across the UK.

“The London 2012 auction not only offers fans the chance to own a piece of history but helps subsidise the cost of Torches for torchbearers.”

The auction website will also feature rare pieces of sporting equipment used in Olympic competitions during the Games.

Lots up for auction will include the baton from the men’s 4x100 relay, a beach volleyball from the Horse Guard’s Parade competition site and tennis balls from Wimbledon.
