Boris Johnson looks to ancient Greece to keep London teens safe

11:23 10 June 2012

Teenagers who feel in danger in London are to be able to seek refuge in ‘safe havens’ dotted around the city, under a new scheme.

Shops are businesses are to be encouraged to become CitySafe Zones. City Hall is one already.

It is part of 100 Days of Peace, involving London Citizens CitySafe Campaign and the Jimmy Mizzen campaign.

The inspiration for 100 Days of Peace comes from ancient Greece. A truce between warring factions was called 50 days ahead of the Olympic Games so athletes could safely prepare to compete.

Jimmy joined a tragic list of teen murder victims when he was stabbed to death in May 2008.

ondon Mayor Boris Johnson said: “Keeping our young people safe and helping them to secure jobs and bright futures continues to be a top priority.

By engaging with young people and working with communities, the 100 Days of Peace initiative builds on this ongoing work, helping to combat the awful affliction of youth violence and greatly contributing to the health and happiness of this city.”
