New neighbours will be moving in next to Stratford’s heritage Three Mills as plans for 741 new homes got the go ahead

The approved scheme, from social landlords East Thames and Southern Housing Group, will also create commercial space and improved riverside walkways next door to the world’s oldest working tidal mill.

Homes will be for rent and shared ownership, with almost 50 per cent large, three bedroom properties, and for private sale.

The development site is situated at Three Mills Lane, within the designated conservation area, next to the Grade I listed House Mill,

A special consideration to the style will see the new buildings set back 55 metres from listed buildings while the homes will be designed with a ‘Victorian warehouse aesthetic’ that reflects the area’s industrial heritage and compliments the existing character and appearance of the area.

Other plans include improvements to the existing A12 pedestrian subway and a new bus bridge over the River Lea to improve access to transport hubs and the amenities at the nearby Strand East development; a significant upgrade to the River Lea’s towpath and new public open spaces. And to maintain economic activity in the area, 10,000m2 of commercial space will be developed.

The development is expected to generate more than 350 new jobs.
