The new recycling and waste collection scheme which has caused controversy in certain parts of the borough has been rolled out in the east this week.

The scheme has caused outrage in pockets of Highgate and Muswell Hill where it has already been introduced, with residents claiming piles of rubbish have been left uncollected.

The new arrangements –which mean non-recyclables will be collected once every two weeks – came into force in Crouch End, Hornsey, Bounds Green, Noel Park and Woodside wards, as well as the whole of Stroud Green and West Green and most of Harringay and Bruce Grove and parts of St Ann’s, White Hart Lane and Tottenham Green wards on Monday.

These homes will still have weekly collection of food and gardening waste, as well as dry recyclable materials.

There is also a free bulky waste collection for items that can be reused or recycled and a new 240-litre wheelie bin so residents can recycle more on the doorstep.

To make the recycling of unused food easier, the council is also supplying free compostable bags to line kitchen caddies for six months.

The council has decided that, as it is collecting the majority of waste every week it means non-recyclables can be collected fortnightly.

A recycling guide has been issued to all households receiving the new service giving full details of how to recycle. More information can also be found at www.haringey.gov.uk/bincollection. Bin collection dates remain the same.
