The star of films including Trainspotting and Moulin Rouge has been made an OBE in the New Years Honours.
Ewan McGregor, who worked with east Londoner Danny Boyle on the film Trainspotting, also played the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequels to the original Star Wars films.
The actor, who is married to Eve Mavrakis, also took part in two motorbike treks with friend and film director Charley Boorman. Their journeys featured in the television documentaries Long Way Round and Long Way Down.
McGregor’s latest film is The Impossible with Naomi Watts.
