A Newham man has been accused of causing the death of a 97-year-old pedestrian.

Nora Gutmann died after she was involved in an accident with a lorry in Baker Street, Central London, last year.

Lorry driver Joao Pedro Correia Lopes, 56, of Ashlin Road, Stratford, was charged last night with causing death by dangerous driving, contrary to Section 1 Road Traffic Act 1988, following the death of Mrs Guttman, from Kilburn, on Marylebone Road, near the junction with Baker Street, NW1 on June 17 last year.

He will appear at West London Magistrates Court next Wednesday April 4.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around noon on June 17. The 97-year-old was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, where she died soon after arriving. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of her death as multiple injuries.
