An elderly woman has been found dead in a house in Hornchurch.
The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was found in Platford Green, Hornchurch, at about 12.25pm. Paramedics were called and pronounced her dead at the scene.
Shortly afterwards, the man – thought to be in his 50s – was arrested nearby. He was taken to an east London hospital with injuries. Police could not be more specific about his injuries, or say where he was found.
The Met’s Homicide and Major Crime unit has launched an investigation.
The woman has yet to be formally identified, and her next of kin have not been informed.
Neighbours this afternoon spoke of their shock, saying the area was usually quiet.
“You don’t think of it right on your doorstep,” said one, who didn’t wish to be named. “It’s horrible.
“The first thing we knew was when we heard the ambulance – and then all hell broke loose and everybody came down.
“We saw [the emergency services] going in and out of her house. It was obvious it was serious.
“We saw a man taken out with a blanket, on his side. As they turned the bed I saw an older face I didn’t recognise.”
It is understood the woman had lived alone following the death of her husband a few years ago.
Another neighbour, who wished to be known only as Lynn, said the woman had lived in the house since it was built.
A London Ambulance Service (LAS) spokesman said ambulance staff treated the man before taking him to hospital, and that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The spokesman could not say who had called the ambulance, or what injuries the man was suffering.
Platford Green, which abuts the Campion School’s grounds, remains cordoned off north of Birch Crescent.
If you have any information about the woman’s death, you can call police on 101, or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
