The man and woman, named locally as Peter and Daphne Seager, were confirmed dead at their home in Stevens Road, Dagenham, on Tuesday afternoon.

They were examined by pathologists at Queens Hospital Mortuary yesterday.

The cause of death was given this morning as “airgun pellet wounds to the head” although toxicology reports are still pending.

Mr and Mrs Seager, both in their 60s, are believed to be survived by four adult children. Next of kin have been informed of the deaths, which are still being treated as unexplained, and a formal identification is expected to take place tomorrow.

Neighbours have paid tribute to the couple and Mrs Seager is understood to have been suffering from terminal cancer.

Brenda Kenny, also of Stevens Road, said she had been good friends with Mrs Seager for 40 years.

She said: “She was a lovely woman, the best friend anyone could ever have. When I was told what had happened I just went numb. I cried.”

Detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating.
