A lorry driver arrested after a crash in which a cyclist died has been bailed.
The accident happened yesterday morning, roughly an hour before London Mayor Boris Johnson announced plans for a Safer Lorry Charge to make roads safer for cyclists.
The cyclist, a woman believed to be aged 30, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident in Thurlow Park Road at the junction with Gallery Road, Dulwich, shortly after 9.25am.
Police believe they know the identity of the woman but are awaiting formal identification.
The 40-year-old driver of the HGV lorry, a white Mercedes, stopped at the scene. He was subsequently arrested in connection with the collision and taken into custody at a south London police station. He has been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in early December.
The Road Death Investigation Unit (RDIU) based at Catford Traffic Garage is investigating.
Mr Johnson’s proposed Safer Lorry Charge would be levied on vehicles which fail to fit basic safety equipment such as sidebars or low skirts to protect cyclists.
Anyone with any information about the accident call the RDIU witness line on 020 8285 1574.
