A murder investigation has been launched following the fatal shooting of a man in Woolwich.
Marcus Innocent of Kingsman Street, Woolwich, was found shortly after 6.20pm on Monday by police and ambulance staff called to an incident.
The 35-year-old was pronouned dead at the scene of the incident in Lord Warwick Street.
A post-mortem gave the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the stomach area.
Prior to Mr Innocent’s death a group consisting of 15 to 20 people, described as black and white individuals, were seen congregating behind a parade of shops in Kingsman Street at the junction with Lord Warwick Street.
Police believe the victim was initially set upon by one person within this group and then by a larger number after which he was shot.
Some of the group were seen to run down Lord Warwick Street towards Frances Street whilst others got into cars parked in Lord Warwick Street by the rear of the shops. These cars then made off from the scene.
An incident room has been opened under the command of Detective Chief Inspector Chris Le Pere of the Trident Gang Crime Command.
DCI Le Pere said: “I appeal to anyone who was in the area of Lord Warwick Street and Kingsman Street that evening who saw this group or who may have seen the events leading up to this murder.
“We believe the victim, who lived locally, was attacked by a group of people congregating in Lord Warwick Street near to the junction with Kingsman Street. However at this early stage the motive for this murder is unclear.
“If you witnessed this shooting, or the events leading up to or immediately after it, please call the incident room.”
Three men have been arrested and subsequently bailed in connection with this investigation pending further enquiries.
