Biggs became infamous after going on the run for 36 years after fleeing prison.

He died last month, aged 84, after years of bad health and having suffered several strokes.

Biggs was handed a 30-year sentence for robbing the Royal Mail freight train on its way between London and Glasgow on August 8, 1963.

The train driver Jack Mills was coshed and never fully recovered, dying a few years later.

The train robber, born in Lambeth, had served just 15 months of his sentence before he escaped Wandsworth Prison.

Mourners have been told not to wear black at today’s service as it is a ‘celebration’ of Biggs’ life.
