The incident happened yesterday afternoon at around 2pm at The Royal Botanic Gardens.

A statement on the website for Kew Gardens yesterday said: “The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew confirms a tragic accident at Kew Gardens this afternoon when a falling tree branch resulted in a fatality.

“We are currently working with police and next of kin are being informed. We cannot comment further at this stage but our deepest sympathy is with family and friends.”

Ambulance staff tried to resuscitate the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed the branch may have fallen due to the adverse weather. Kew Gardens is closed today as a precautionary measure due to the weather.

A statement on the attraction’s website said: “The Met Office have issued a severe weather warning for London and the south east predicting heavy rain and winds gusting 50-55mph.

“As a precaution, Kew Gardens will not be open to the public today. We apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment this may cause.”
