Londoner of the Day goes to the dancing lollipop lady of east London – Arlene Cameron, for putting a smile on the faces of pupils at South Grove Primary School in Walthamstow.
Stepping out into the path of cars and lorries day-in, day-out, helps youngsters reach school safely – but dealing with the weight of traffic and some motorists must get draining at times.
Not for Mrs Cameron though, whose jig on the kerb in Monkhouse Road is a hit with kids and also drivers – who have been honking their approval.
She ascribes her joy to the experience of surviving a serious illness in 2006, which transformed her attitude to life by making her cherish each day in east London.
What a great example she is setting, and also how pleasing that Waltham Forest Council has not come down like a ton of bricks on this display of spontaneity by an employee.
The Authority did not condemn her, instead hailing the eye-catching displays – which include throwing her multi-coloured stick in air and then catching it.
For brightening up drab mornings, Mrs Cameron is a worthy Londoner of the Day.
