Robert Coleman is organiser of the London Cultureseekers Group. Here he shares some of his top tips on the best places to see in the capital.
Q. Where do you live and why?
A. Barking, my flat was really cheap and has good transport links via Tube and train to the city
Q. What does London mean to you?
A. I love London and have wanted to live and work here since I was very young (I grew up in Essex). It's the greatest city on Earth!
Q. What is your earliest London memory?
A. Dropping my panda stuffed toy off the Woolwich Ferry into the Thames when I was about three or four years old.
Q. If you could live anywhere in London, where would it be?
A. Greenwich, it's got everything - brilliant park, cool shops and restaurants, fantastic history and great views from the top of the park
Q. What advice would you give to someone new in London?
A. It depends on how much time you have, but don’t just visit the touristy bits like Buck Palace, Tower of London, National Gallery etc. Spend some time visiting some of the smaller undiscovered places like: Dr Johnson's House, The Brunel Museum, Dennis Severs House. Also, go on some guided walks to get to know the city.
Q. What is your favourite London view?
A. At night on the South Bank looking at St Paul's Cathedral all lit up.
Q. Where is your favourite place to eat or drink?
A. Lots of good restaurants on Upper Street, Islington or in Greenwich.
Q. Where are your favourite places to shop?
A. Department stores on Oxford Street
Q. What is your favourite London spot for relaxing?
A. Hyde Park
Q. What is your best London discovery or hidden treasure?
A. Dennis Severs House and Sir John Soane's Museum.
Q. What is the first thing you would do if you were Mayor?
A. Increase the boat services on the Thames and make them free!
