NewVIc college student Samuel Berhanu, from Plaistow, has been nominated as an Olympic torchbearer

A NewVIc sixth form college student is the latest to have been revealed as an Olympic Games torchbearer.

Samuel Berhanu, 18, from Plaistow, who is studying for applied science, was nominated by Jodie Grant, sports coach at the NewVIc Sports Academy, who was impressed by his contribution to college life.

As well as being captain of the basketball team, Samuel played a key role in organising Get Active and Arty Week at the college.

The latter event was so successful it was awarded an Inspire Mark.

Samuel will be pounding the streets of Newham on July 21.

He said: “I am really excited to have been chosen as a torchbearer. It is a privilege and a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Seven further NewVIc students have also been selected to be Young Games Maker Ball Boy and Girl volunteers at the London 2012 Paralympic wheelchair tennis.

The students have started training in advance of the Games and have already learnt the correct stance, positions to stand or kneel on the court, ball rolling, catching and throwing, and scoring.
