The Oxford versus Cambridge boat race was stopped when a protestor swam into the path of the teams on the River Thames, today.
In rocky conditions, the crews were forced to pause just over halfway along the course at around 2.25pm, today (Saturday).
Officials made the decision for the boats to reverse and re-start the race near to Hammersmith Bridge, following the protest near Chiswick Eyot.
No similar incident involving a swimming protestor has occurred in the history of the race between England’s two top universities, said the BBC in its TV broadcast.
The 2001 race was suspended as a result of a collision between the boats.
