In rocky conditions, the crews were forced to pause just over halfway along the course at around 2.25pm, today (Saturday).

Officials made the decision for the boats to reverse and re-start the race near to Hammersmith Bridge, following the protest near Chiswick Eyot.

No similar incident involving a swimming protestor has occurred in the history of the race between England’s two top universities, said the BBC in its TV broadcast.

The 2001 race was suspended as a result of a collision between the boats.
