Paralympian David Weir was awarded Freedom of the City of London today to mark the launch of a new grants scheme for disabled aspiring sports stars.

The six-time gold medal winner, from Sutton, was at the Guildhall with aspiring young wheelchair athletes this morning to collect his honour in recognition of his excellent achievements during London 2012.

The City of London Corporation charity, the City Bridge Trust, has appealed for more organisations to apply for grants enabling disabled people to apply for grants.

City Bridge Trust chairman Billy Dove said: “As the UK cheered on athletes such as David Weir, thousands of disable people were inspired to get involved with their local sports club.

“Our new City Sporting Chance will provide organisations with the resources they need to widen access to sport for those who may not have had the opportunity to take part before.”

Lord Mayor of the City of London, Roger Gifford, added: “This summer London was proud to be the backdrop for some of the greatest moments in sport, including David Weir powering his way to gold.”
