A London borough has removed a sign telling people to throw their rubbish in the bin in Greek, Kurdish and Turkish - but not in English.
Haringey Council removed the anti-littering notice in Alexandra Park Road, Muswell Hill, last week. It is thought to have been in the area since April.
David Douglas, 49, who lives in the road, was perplexed by the sign, which disappeared on Friday, the day after appearing on the website of a national newspaper.
Mr Douglas said: “Is Haringey [council] implying that the only people who drop litter are those who don’t speak English?
“We have a small percentage of people in that bit of Muswell Hill who could work out from the sign what it is.”
A council spokesman said: “These are old signs that were used for a limited time in areas where a number of people caught littering did not understand English. We no longer produce any enforcement signs that do not include English.”
