Assembly’s Labour chair fires warning shot at Tory Mayor Boris Johnson

The London Assembly’s new chair began her third term last night with a warning shot fired at Tory Mayor Boris Johnson over housing.

Labour’s Jennette Arnold, voted Chair for the next 12 months, warned that the Assembly would watch closely to see how London’s housing crisis would be tackled during the Olympics year.

“The Mayor has significant new powers to address regeneration and housing need,” she said. “But we’ll be watching to see he delivers his election promises effectively.”

She added: “We have just fought a robust election. Now is the time for all Assembly members to work together to improve the quality of life in London across the full scope of the GLA’s responsibilities.”

Veteran Green campaigner Darren Johnson was voted Deputy Chair at the Assembly’s Annual Meeting at City Hall, which also voted in committees to examine Boris’s policies and to investigate issues concerning Londoners.
