Jenny Jones heralded a “great day” for the Green Party as it seized third place in the race for Mayor of London - pushing aside the Liberal Democrats.
“It was the most superb campaign we’ve ever run and we deserved the votes,” said Ms Jones, at City Hall.
“This is a breakthrough, a great day for Green politics - when we are the third party in London, It’s a first for Britain and definitely for London.”
Mrs Jones spoke of her trepidation at the prospect of a win for Boris Johnson - who sealed victory tonight by beating Ken Livingstone into second place.
“I really didn’t want a Tory Mayor this time, but London recovered after Boadicea, so it can probably survive another four years of Boris,” she said.
“Our campaign has attracted a new generation of Greens taking us forward next time.
“We’ve talked about lowering fares and the things people feel need fixing. More and more people are realising the social and environmental justice are part of the same thing.”
