London Assembly questions if Olympic Park schemes are ‘affordable’

The legacy plans for east London’s Olympic Park after the 2012 Games is being thrashed out at City Hall today.

London Assembly members are questioning the Legacy Development Corporation about its planning framework around the massive park along the Lea River that stretches two miles from Bow Bridge to Hackney Wick and Stratford.

Outline planning permission for future neighbourhoods has now been approved.

But the Assembly’s Planning committee wants to know whether these neighbourhoods will be affordable and how they will be integrated into surrounding, existing communities—rather than become exclusive and set apart.

This includes schemes like ‘East Village’ which is set to take over the Olympic Athletes’ complex after the Games, with its new ‘E20’ postcode.

Key themes during the questions session are how family housing, open spaces, road and rail connections to the rest of east London and community infrastructure will be included in the plans.

The session, open to the public, begins at 3.15pm in City Hall’s Assembly Chamber.
