London Elections: Boris Johnson delivers winning speech

00:35 05 May 2012

Boris Johnson delivered the political elegy for his rival Ken Livingstone upon winning the race to be Mayor of London.

“Last time we stood here, I said some complementary things about you; much good it did me.

“But of all the left wing politicians I can think of, you have been the most creative and original.

“If you will promise not to stand again I will look forward to having that non-taxpayer funded drink we’ve not fitted into our diaries.”

Johnson pledged London will be ready to welcome the world for the Olympic Games, next month.

“The world will see a city going through a neo-Victorian surge in London transport, the murder rate down, the Olympics venues have been completed on time,” he said.

“They will find a city swarming with blue bikes, a new bus; they will find a City Hall administration getting on with its work of directing scare resources to what matters to Londoners

“Cutting Council tax, getting more police on the streets, investing in housing, travel and regeneration projects which will create 200,000 jobs.”

Getting young people into work will be a priority promised Mayor Johnson.

“I will dedicate myself to making sure Londoners and above all young Londoners are ready to take the jobs that this amazing city creates and I continue will fight for a good deal for Londoners.

Key members of Johnson’s administration lost their place on the London Assembly.

“This has been a long and gruelling campaign and I’m very sorry tonight to see the loss of valued colleagues; Richard Barnes, Brian Coleman and others. I want particularly to thank all the contestants tonight

“I want overall all to thanks the people of London for giving me a new mandate to take us forward.

“Tomorrow we continue with our work, but tonight we will celebrate a sensible, cost-effective Tory administration in London.”
