Exactly one year on from Kate Middleton becoming the Duchess of Cambridge by marrying Prince William, London24 looks back at how the royal couple have spent the first 12 months of their married life.

April 29 2011 - Prince William and Catherine Middleton marry at Westminster Abbey as a million people line the streets of the capital to celebrate. Their wedding was the social event of the year in 2011, uniting a gloomy Britain miserable in a time of austerity.

May 2011 - The royal couple honeymoon in the Seychelles as the newly married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

June 2011 - William and Kate attend their first public engagement as a married couple at a gala for the Absolute Return for Kids (Ark) charity with stars including Liz Hurley, Jemima Khan and David Furnish.

July 2011 - The pair embark on a 10-day tour of Canada and California, visiting cities including Ottawa, Calgary, and Los Angeles. They take part in a dragon boat race and don cowboy hats to watch a rodeo, and William addresses crowds in both English and French in a gesture of respect to Canadian tradition.

August 2011 - The Duke and Duchess visit Birmingham to show their support for those affected by the summer riots. The Hallmark channel’s TV movie William & Catherine: A Royal Romance premieres on Channel 5 in the UK.

September 2011 - The couple open a cancer treatment centre together at the Royal Marsden hospital in Surrey, while pop star Britney Spears says it would be “crazy and cool” if the Duke and Duchess came to see her on tour.

October 2011 - Commonwealth leaders agree on an historic change to give sex equality in royal succession, meaning that any future child of the Duke and Duchess would accede to the throne regardless of their gender.

November 2011 - The couple announce they will establish their own London base at Princess Margaret’s former home at Kensington Palace.

December 2011 - William and Kate visit homeless youngsters just before Christmas in London, and acquire a cocker spaniel puppy called Lupo early on in the month.

January 2012 - The royal couple see in the New Year in a reindeer herder’s tepee pitched at the Duchess’ parents’ home in Bucklebury, Berkshire.

February 2012 - Toy company Mattel announces the launch of William and Kate Barbie dolls to coincide with their first wedding anniversary in April. William continues his RAF service as a search and rescue pilot in the Falkland Islands, while Kate spends time at their Anglesey home.

March 2012 - The Duchess of Cambridge speaks in public for the first time as the patron of a children’s hospice near Ipswich, and showed off her hockey skills during a visit to the Great Britain hockey team at the Olympic Park in east London. She welcomed the Duke home after his six-week tour of the Falklands, meeting him on the tarmac at 4am as he touched down at RAF Brize Norton.

April 2012 - William and Kate join friends for a celebration of their first wedding anniversary. It is thought the royals were then travelling back to their home in North Wales on Sunday to celebrate their anniversary privately.
