Some of the royal’s most famous outfits, including the black Versace dress she wore to a 1995 film premiere have helped to attract record number of visitors to the newly revamped central London palace.

Curator Deirdre Murphy of Historic Royal Palaces told Businessweek.com: “The princess had a strong sense of the power of clothes. She developed her own unique style, particularly after the early period, when she was wearing naive, girly clothes.”

The dress is one of five in the exhibition ‘Diana: Glimpses of a Modern Princess’ which also features the black silk taffeta Emanuel gown that Diana wore on her first official engagement as Prince Charles’s fiancee in March 1981.

The exhibition also features a display on Queen Victoria, the only monarch to serve longer than Queen Elizabeth and Deirdre says she hopes it will show people the “woman behind the crown”.

She added: “We want visitors to get to know the woman behind the crown, and to feel that she’s not just the old lady in black who reputedly said ‘We are not amused.’”
