Buckingham Palace concert for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: Preview and weather update

Pop music royalty will perform outside Buckingham Palace tonight in today’s big event celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Stevie Wonder is among the all-star list of artists performing, which also includes Sir Paul McCartney, JLS, Sir Elton John and Kylie Minogue.

Other acts include Will.i.am. Sir Tom Jones, Jessie J, Dame Shirley Bassey, Annie Lennox and Ed Sheeran.

The concert follows yesterday’s spectacular Diamond Jubilee pageant that attracted more than a million people to the banks of the River Thames to watch the event despite wet and cold conditions.

The Queen will be joined by many members of the Royal Family including the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry at the concert.

A highlight of the night will see pop veterans Madness perform on Buckingham Palace’s roof, playing their hit Our House.

Another special moment will see the performance of Sing, the special Jubilee song written by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Before the concert is held on a stage in the shadow of Buckingham Palace 10,000 lucky ballot winners, who won seats to the event, will enjoy a picnic in Buckingham Palace’s garden with a hamper created by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, the Queen’s royal chef Mark Flanagan and Waitrose.

Revellers attending tonight’s concert should be able to leave their umbrellas at home - after forecasters predicted an end to the wet and wintry weather.

The gloomy skies are set to brighten for the musical extravaganza with dry and sunny conditions expected as the event gets under way at 7.30pm.

Experts said the weather will vastly improve as the day progresses following the downpours and cold winds that hit the capital during the river pageant.

Six pageant participants were taken to hospital yesterday after becoming very cold and wet, while another 40 people were treated by medics on the banks of the river.
