People who have contributed to their communities young and old have been honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

They include Diana Campbell who is a stalwart of the community in Orpington and is honoured with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the community in the town and Valerie Jurgens who also receives a BEM for services to people in Petts Wood.

The 2nd Shortlands Guides leader and mentor Gillian Dawson is made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to young people.

Mrs Campbell who is involved in a range of community work in Orpington said she was stunned when she received the letter telling her of her nomination for the BEM and was curious to find out who had nominated her.

She said: “I was taken aback when I got the letter from the Cabinet Office. I have had the Bromley mayoral award in 2007 which I thought was an honour to have that.”

Mrs Campbell has been involved with Abbeyfield homes in Orpington for 30 years and has also been involved with a luncheon club at the Civic Centre and for Age Concern. She was chairwoman of Saxon Court Centre for older people in Lychgate Road and also ran the Friendship Club for elderly and lonely people at St John’s United Reform Church on Knoll Rise for 35 years.

She has met a lot of people through her voluntary work in Orpington and also ran a catering business called Dial Catering, which took its name from her first name and her husband Alastair’s before selling it in 1972.

She said she was delighted with the honour and had kept it secret from her two sons Malcolm and Iain.
