Archant

New street art believed to be the work of world-famous graffiti artist Banksy has been sprayed onto a Poundland store in Wood Green.

The stencil, showing a young boy hunched over a sewing machine, appeared on the store’s wall in Whymark Avenue, near Turnpike Lane Tube station, overnight on Monday.

The graffiti was initially accompanied by Union Jack bunting fixed to the wall, which has since been removed, in an apparent sideways look at British pride around the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. The Olympic Torch Relay will pass right by the site of the work as it makes its way through Haringey on July 25.

However, the piece is yet to appear on Banksy’s official website, fuelling speculation about whether the graffiti is genuine.

Alize Perrot, 22, of Westbury Avenue, said: “It’s amazing, I was at Camden Market the other day looking at canvasses of his work and now it’s in Turnpike Lane!”

Responding to allegations of child labour made against Poundland in 2010, which have resurfaced on the back of the appearance of the artwork, Tim McDonnell, Poundland’s retail director, said this week: “Poundland has a strong ethical stance on all labour issues.”
