Commuters and tourists were treated to an alternative take on a taxi, as a 19th century Wild West horse and carriage was merged with a London black cab.

Once the original form of the much-loved hackney carriage, the 19th century horse and carriage was 'pimped' with a 21st century taxi to promote new TV Western series Hell on Wheels.

It came complete with leather seating for six people, an electrical outlet for laptops and iPads, an oil-burning lantern and a working 'For Hire' light.

The Hell on Wheels taxi even came with the traditional bale of hay, required by UK law to be carried by all London hackney carriage drivers to feed their horses (section 51 of the London Hackney Carriage Act 1831), a traditional law still adhered to in today's London hackney carriages, with drivers keeping a fistful of straw or hay in their boot.

The Hell on Wheels cab began its journey at Kings Cross, before heading to Oxford Street, Regents Street, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

Hell on Wheels premieres on TCM this Sunday at 9pm.
